Ten-Year plan leaves City with $424 million Plus $$$ in debt.
With the closure of the LongTerm Council Community Plan in the Strategy and Policy Committee last Thursday, Wellington City Councillors had voted to blow the city's debt out to $424 million dollars by the end of the ten year plan plus interest repayments. Debt currently stands at between $210-212 million dollars.
The Council of June 28 2006 has now confirmed the LTCCP. The latest grand scheme is a 12 court indoor stadium at Kilbirnie with a price tag of $50 millon. Ratepayers now have an undischargable mortgage to City Hall. It will also be passed on to their children.
Added to this debt is a major shift in the rates burden on to residential ratepayers as a consequence of Council's agreement with the commercial community to transfer wealth from the residents to business.

Dear Bryan
Thanks for your latest blog. What interesting reading it makes! To be honest, most of the voting line-ups are completely predictable, which doesn't make them any more palatable. It seems our local greenie has lost her way somewhat. I'm amazed at some of the projects she has supported, even if it compromise for projects dear to her own heart.
Oh dear!
Thank God none of my
family will be living in Wgtn to inherit the crippling debt. That only makes it ever so slightly less intolerable to me, because there are still all the current young who will have this gigantic millstone (and growing like a cancerous goiter!) around their necks - a good reason to flee this city!
What can one do?! We talk and wheedle until we're blue in the face, and these greedy piranhas and their scavenging friends can only think of how to pick every last morsel from the delicious carcass that is Wgtn. Sometimes I feel so angry I can't even put into words what I feel.
(Bryan, add this to your blog if you wish, although this empty spiel doesn't really contribute anything new to constructive thought. If I'm tired and dispirited by it all, God knows how people like you and Jack Ruben, who have to be 'up close and personal' with it every day, can cope, without wanting to throw yourselves off the nearest cliff. I can only offer you my profound
admiration!)
Cheers,
Maggie
