New Zealand Election , Wellington Central Candidates Meeting at 176 Aro St, Aro Valley August 9 2008

I asked the candidates what they would do if Peak Oil was a given and that along with the end of cheap energy the financial intitutions were collapsing. What kind of paradigm shift would be necessary? Sue Kedgely and Stephen Franks showed a good understanding. Sue Kedgely said the Greens had a plan and Stephen Franks worried about what the public would accept. Don Franks stuck with the class struggle and Grant Robertson said Labour would keep doing what it has always done which is sit on its hands and have more discussion groups.

Yes Bryan,

Again the varied comments from the candidates on the "important issues" indicate to me that New Zealand still has not grown up to the fact it takes a "collective social consciousness" to deal with subjects like peak-oil and climate change, so we can all be part of the solution making the sacrifices needed to face the future head on.

We should do this not for ourselves, but our children and theirs.

The only example I have is from the Netherlands in 1972/3. A pro-Israel statement by our Minister of Foreign Affairs at a United Nation convention, faced us with an acute oil crisis when the oil producing counties took offence to this statement and cut our supplies. The immediate response by the Dutch government was petrol vouchers for everyone, and guess what we survived?

Come on New Zealand you can do it!
