Writers International (NZ) Launch

MC Lewis Scott at the Launch of Writers International (NZ) with his Angel in Wellington City's Council Chamber. It was a night of poems and poets drawn from a United Nations of writers speaking to the community.

Lewis Scott spoke with conviction and authority at the Writers International ( NZ) Launch tonight. "It was an age of duplicity, Mr Scott said, and poets were once again called to speak the truth to the community."

Artist as prophet is a time honoured tradition and Mr Scott reminded the audience of the high place of the poet in keeping the flame of truth burning. Readings came from Ron Riddell, Mavis Boyd, Catherine Boyle, Jo Patti (who also read on behalf of Nick Laing), Puri Alvarez and Mark Pirie. You can see their work in the recently published, "World Words - An Anthology of International Writers In New Zealand".

DIFFICULT TIMES AHEAD WARNS Gordon Rose

Just when most people have given up and want a quiet life Gordon Rose is going on the offensive. Recently I paid a visit to a man who is nearly 90 years old and who had requested an audience with me.

Gordon spent his working life as a builder extraordinaire and inventor (one of his specialities is the largest model of a Moa). His keen understanding of geo-politics led him to warn America about the threat of Japanese aggression when he was in Pearl Harbour just before it was bombed.

Gordon is once again alerting people to the coming economic crisis that will see many ratepayers in dire straits. Rates are going to be a serious problem to many people including the elderly, Gordon warns. Gordon is not happy with the direction the city has taken and the continuing shift of business rates onto the residents.

WATERFRONT WATCH GO ON THE OFFENSIVE

The Chair of waterfront Watch Pauline Swann is joined by committee member's David Capper, Ron Oliver , Chris Greenwood, Jocelyn Brooks and Nigel Foster in a protest about the proposed Hotel being built on the outer T of Wellington's waterfront.

I asked Pauline Swann, chair of Waterfront Watch, what the protest was about. Here is her reply.

What another wonderful day to celebrate Waitangi Day at Frank Kitts Park (saved from buildings all along Jervois Quay by a previous petition /submissions).

Six members of Waterfront Watch, wearing sandwich boards protesting the Hotel on the Outer T, joined the happy crowd and received a very warm welcome from the public who thanked us for our continual battle on behalf of the citizens of the region. Many signed the petition (some took copies away) and asked to be included on our mailing list.
Amongst the many we spoke with were visitors to Wellington from England, America, Japan, South Africa, all full of praise for the harbourfront....the carnival atmosphere at Frank Kitts.......Don't lose this wonderful public open space by privatisation........a great village atmosphere....plenty of hotels close by, etc.

We are now planning a stand in Cuba Mall on the weekends and are calling for volunteers. A newsletter is being readied for posting out to members and friends.
