Wellington Central Grey Power- Pepptalk photography

Today I had the pleasure of addressing Wellington
Central Grey Power as a guest speaker. It was
an absolute delight to be in such good company to
discuss www. pepptalk.net, the DLTCCP and
the media.

The wonderful thing about Grey Power is how diverse
they are and many of the members have campaigned
with me on some excellent causes, going back to Save
Capital Power.

While I did speak about some important issues like
Peak Oil, of which they were pleasingly well informed,
the best part of the meeting came with the questions
and answers. I have invited the members to join the family
of Pepptalk. I would ask you to make them welcome as they
come onboard. These are quality people with penty of wisdom,
so lets make them at home with our e-democracy.

Cheers
Bryan

Requiem for Ilott Green

Last week Council voted to extend the agreement
with the School of Music to replace this lovely
green space with a building development.
The extension was voted against by Crs Jack Ruben
and Bryan Pepperell who firmly believe it should
be retained as green space and not become part of
the built environment.

Cr Bryan Pepperell reminded the Council of how
he stood beside Jack Ilot on the day Mr Ilot was taken
in a wheelchair and shown the space that would be
named after him. Cr Pepperell was accompanied by
Cr Mary Varnham who later campaigned with
Pepperell to retain the Green as open green space.
Councillor David Zwartz campaigned with Cr Pepperell for
the Green's retention in his time on Council.

Cr Ruben has opposed the development since his
election to Council.

We at Pepptalk wonder where the other
Green councillors are.

Gaylene Preston has been celebrated
as one of New Zealand's leading filmmakers,
having made some of the most enduring
popular classics of New Zealand cinema.

I bumped into Gaylene at the Deluxe cafe
this week and she agreed to be photographed
for Pepptalk. I explained to Gaylene that
we at Pepptalk want to feature more of
Wellington's outstanding women. We think
she is wonderful.

Gordon Rose - Artist and racontuer

Gordon Rose of Johnsonville. Amongst other things
Gordan makes sculptures of native New Zealand
birds. He is one of the more interesting characters
of Wellington with a breath taking history. Posted by Picasa

Dr Jay Shaw taught me Philosophy from 1977-1980

Dr Shaw is a wonderful person
and a world class philosopher.

I had the priviledge of being taught
philosophy by Dr Shaw in the mid
1970's at Victoria University where
he was a senior lecturer in the Department
of Philosophy. You are most welcome to
join us for his latest book launch on Saturday
May the 6th at Victoria University.

Dear Bryan,
As suggested, I attach two formats of the flyer
and my CV for your kind information . As mentioned,
our Society for Global Philosophy has organised a NZ
Book Launch on 6 May at 3:30 PM. You are most
cordially invited to this event as one of our guest speakers.
On behalf of our committee, I am delighted to invite the
Honourable Mayor of Wellington as one of our distinguished
guests and speakers. As you are aware, this book is
a Festschrift. I would be grateful if you would convey
our invitation to her. With best wishes,

Dead Vicious / K.A. Simpson

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT / cover from latest Dead Vicious CD
Ken Simpson must be given the credit for walking
the talk in this week's feature on Wellington's special
people. It will now be a regular spot on BACK
TO THE FUTURE.

K.A. Simpson
is known to his friends by various
stage names, Ken Vicious, Brad, Johnny Rotten
depending on his moods, that can change quickly.
In the time that I have known Mr Simpson he has
demonstrated a single minded determination
to break the mould of conformity. Ken is a master
of the literature and the classics.

In 2002 Ken formed a punk rock band with his old friend
Bill Woods. ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT is packed
full of social commentary. Simpson is a back to the roots
radical with the message of the poet /prophet in the best
tradition. Wellington has got it so wrong and Simpson
wants you to know in his latest expression of raw in
your face punk music.

You can purchase a copy of the CD ARRESTED
DEVELOPMENT from The FREEDOM SHOP
or direct order from ksimpson@ihug.co.nz Posted by Picasa

Valerie Morse / Radical Activist

Intelligent and articulate Valerie Morse
arrived at Wellington's Cycle Aware's Bike To
Work Day and completely upstaged Mayor
Kerry with a blistering verbal attack interrupting
the Mayor's speech. Valerie was in no mood to
take prisoners. With a commanding and
determined tone to her voice she stopped the
Mayor dead in her tracks. The motorway by-
pass was an act of vandalism that had obviously
irked Ms Morse and she had been given an
opportunity to make a point. The Mayor was
dumbfounded and lost her composure. Valerie
Morse had spoilt the Mayor's day! Posted by Picasa

Modern rail system needed instead of Transmission Gully

Modern rail system needed in preference to
facilitating further motorway madness!
Option 3 is the way to go

Recently I said at a Council meeting that it was predictable to see that the Wellington City Council has learnt nothing from the recent petrol price rises. We are in a culture of denial, starting with our political leaders. At a time when the world is being warned that the age of cheap energy is over we should be looking for the most efficient way to move people. While climate change was now on the radar of most people, oil companies continued to send mixed messages. The public can't really be blamed for clinging to the transport of last century but there was no excuse for the educators and leaders who had been given the facts.

No responsible government should, or in reality could, allow the wasteful use of a scarce resource (oil ). With many people continuing to commute one person per car, some hard medicine is required. That could take the form of positive discouragement, as is the case in most enlightened countries. Neither Transmission Gully nor the Costal Option should be a consideration in this new century. Fuel price is now dictating Option 3 as the way to the security of our future. The most attractive cities in the world are now ones with fewer cars and carless centres, they are good cities to live and work in.
