NEWTOWN MARKET 22 NOVEMBER 2008

Finally the day came after some carefully planning by a small group of dedicated community minded people and what a success the market was.

Many thanks to the family of Project Newtown. Special thanks to Lofty Surridge for giving his time and the Phillip Moore's Truck to collect the produce. Special thanks also to John Young of Levin for providing produce.

Many thanks for help and advice of Brian Hogan. Much appreciation to the tireless effort of Maria Van der Meel and Duncan Holland and the rest of the family of Project Newtown in keeping this vision alive.

Lastly thanks to WCC for the help given.

I'm really tired after the big push at the end guys.
Cheers

Thanks Bryan,

After campaigning for months on the streets of Wellington to abolish GST of food, the Newtown People's Market is the only way "we" the people can take control of our food supplies and how much we pay for them.

The biggest learning curve for me personally was, and it will have to come as a warning to you all, that your food supplies are tied up in a cartell that does not like to be infultrated by small private operators.

Because we have turned our backs on the land as individuals we have allowed a select few to take over and hold us to ransom not only with supplies but how much we pay for food.

We must reverse this as of immediat and join in projects collectively and become the masters of our own destiny once again.

Not so long ago everyone had a garden of sorts and community exchange happened between neighbours over the fence.

These days we are lucky if we even know who our neighbours are?
It is not too late but we need a movement to change this around.

Lastly I would like to issue another warning for those who are thinking of joining the movement and start growing their own, about a WCC bylaw preventing private homeowners from collecting rainwater of their roofs this is "NUTS". The only way to overcome this is to totally ignore the bylaw on a large scale or contact your local councillor to lobby for its immediate removal.

You must take control and be the difference, teach your children and your grandchildren they are going to need it most.

Stop complaining about battery hens and take a few chooks they will also take care of your snails in the garden.

Mother Earth calling..............

Hoping to be of service
